Elza’s journey in Mega Minds Academy started in January 2022. She is a chatty individual, always one of the first to participate in discussions during our Creative Writing Master Class.

Coming from a family where everyone spoke Chinese, Elza often struggled to put across her thoughts and ideas in proper formal English. She was scoring low 20s when she first joined us, often losing marks due to her use of colloquial language and at times, inaccurate story plot. I remembered one of the few compositions she wrote. We were on the theme of ‘A Gift’ and she could only recall the birthday present she received last year.

Disheartened, Elza continued to persevere. 

In Mega Minds Academy, our English team has formulated a cohesive curriculum that targets the different learning styles of our students. Our Creative Writing Master Class exposes students to  dynamic story plots and key descriptors that will make their writing come alive. We spur on students to think outside the box and never to use stories from their own personal experience. Elza was encouraged to be more creative and she even came up with the idea of receiving the most improved award for English-which to her, was the greatest gift she could wish for. Elza started including topic sentences in her paragraphs and  became more confident in the usage of new descriptors. She even applied the ‘See-Character-Story’ approach and has been writing compositions with riveting introductions.

Within a few months, not only has Elza applied the writing techniques she has learned from our lessons, Elza has grown to be more assured in her spoken and written English. She has even received praise from her English teacher in school and obtained desirable marks for her recent composition test. I can still remember Elza’s beaming smile when she told the class of her achievement. These days, she is scoring 30s and we are immensely proud of how far Elza has come

Renowned author-Jonathan Culver wrote, “The English Language is a work in progress. Have fun with it.” Elza is still a work in progress, but we know for sure that she has grown to love writing and is having heaps of fun in her learning journey with us.
